Soup is fat

19 Jan

I mean Soup the cat.

We took Soup to the vet to get his shots and to check out a small issue he was having. When we left North Carolina he weighed in at almost 14 pounds, definitely a heavyweight. But he’s a large cat, very tall and long, so the vet there never made any real mention of his size.

Well. He now weighs closer to 17 pounds. I think we have a problem.

Part of his weight, I believe, is attributable to inactivity. When we moved to Louisiana we had to leave Stuart, the other cat, with my Mom. He is now an indoor/outdoor cat and has adjusted beautifully to the lifestyle change. Soup, however, has become Captain LazyPants Who Sleeps On The Dog Bed All Day (he likes ridiculously long titles). Thus, I have set out on a campaign to get him to play more.

I made cat toys. *

I stuffed them and laced them with catnip, then placed them ever so lovingly by his nose.

He played with each of them for about 10 seconds. Then he walked away.

I’m going to keep leaving them near him when we leave for work in the mornings, with the hope that he will secretly play while we’re gone. I’m almost certain that this aloof and distant personality of his is all a show. Deep down he loves to play with toys and cuddle.

*That is supposed to be a BALB/c mouse. I was going to make him a C57BL/6 as well, but since he didn’t play with the first one, I didn’t waste my time. If you actually know what those things mean (Katie) you’re a super geek. Points for you.

Everyone knows BALBs are better! You did the right thing making a BALB/c first.

He does not look fat in the picture. In fact, he looks sleek and healthy and loves his toys.

Ahhh, the fat lazy cat woos. I have the same problem 🙂 The toys are super cute. Maybe the kid will play with them?

Love it! It’s good you didn’t make him a C57BL/6, they can be really mean.

My cats love pom-poms. You know, the cheap fluffy little ones you can pick up in a bag of 20 for a couple bucks at the fabric store. They also love those newfangled toys that make noise. They have this bird that chirps every time you move it and they’ll play with it for hours… especially in the middle of the night.

Good luck on increasing Soup’s exercise!
