How to attract strange looks

7 Jul

Here I am, 9 months pregnant, sitting in the armchair with my laptop balanced on my lap. Over the past 9 months I’ve been making a mental list of the things that have caused people to give me odd looks. So far, I can report that doing the following things while pregnant will make people look at you oddly and, if you’re lucky, offer you help. If you’re not so lucky you’ll receive lots of unwanted advice from the freshly MD’d doctors who walk around the med center you work at.

1. Check the oil in your car. Every time I’ve done this some nice man at the next pump over asks if I need any help.

2. Take the stairs. I climb roughly 12 flights of stairs everyday, 3 of them to get to my lab. I pass lots of people who look at me like I must be crazy, and have had several random comments. The comments range from supportive to admonishing. Why anyone would admonish someone for taking the stairs is beyond me.

3. Carry around really large but empty cardboard boxes. This gets comments from just about everyone. Sometimes people offer to carry the boxes for me, sometimes they just tell me I shouldn’t be carrying it and then walk away. But they always look at me strangely.

4. Go for a run or a very vigorous walk. I don’t think that needs more explaining.

5. Walk around a college campus. I spent most of today at the undergrad campus using their microscope facilities. Tons of students looked at me in a very confused way. It probably didn’t help that I don’t look much older than the students themselves and was walking around with a college junior.

Those are the big ones. I also get strange looks just by walking around the med center wearing my lab coat. Wearing protective eyewear will also draw the looks, especially if said eyewear is worn in conjunction with a lab coat and gloves. Going outside in the ridiculous heat will do it too. And at this point, I think I’m big enough to draw looks no matter what I’m doing.

So here I was at 37 weeks; I’m now almost at 39, which thankfully means only a little bit longer to go.

Oh, and have I told you that we’re moving this weekend? I sometimes wonder if we secretly try to make our lives as hard as possible.

Protective goggles and a lab coat will draw strange looks whether you're pregnant or not!
