Snack time! Popcorn

Okay, I completely love popcorn. The salt, the butter, the salt. Sometimes the cheese. And movie theatre popcorn? Well, that is the jackpot of all popcorn! Of course, for at home consumption the packages are always nice, and come in enough variety that you can pick one that easily fits your idea of good popcorn. Like kettle corn, or natural white, or movie butter.

Popcorn is a really great snack, with about 30 calories per cup of air popped corn (sans butter or oil). It’s also packed with complex carbs and high in fiber, making it very filling while still being yummy. And! It’s super easy to make yourself.

Here’s how I do it:

Take a microwave safe glass dish that has a glass lid. Place enough kernels in there to cover the bottom in a single layer. Put in microwave and nuke on high. It will take longer for the kernels to start popping than the bagged kind does, so be patient. Once it starts popping, keep a close eye on the microwave, and stop it when the pops are 3 to 5 seconds apart. All in all, it should take 5 to 6 minutes.

Next, take the popped corn and dump it out on a cookie sheet. Spray it lightly with butter flavored Pam or other cooking spray, and sprinkle with your topping of choice. Some good toppings are:

cinnamon
salt (yes, I love the salt)
cajun seasoning for a little heat
sweet paprika (in moderation – a little goes a long way!)
that powdered cheese stuff that you can buy in a shaker in the store
grated Parmesan cheese

Then, go sit on the couch, watch a movie, and enjoy your snack!
